Lights out in Littlehampton, council proposes

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has recently made a decision to amend its street lighting policy.

This would see residential areas in the county go from all night lighting to part-night lighting.

Littlehampton Town Council is now seeking the views of local residents, businesses and community groups on West Sussex County Council’s decision to switch off street lights in the town.

Part-night lighting would mean lights would be switched off between 12.30am and 5.30am.

This system has been in operation in many residential roads in West Sussex since the 1970s.

Currently, Littlehampton is lit all night, with dimmed lighting in some areas, but under the revised system, all but the town centre and main roads would become partially lit.

Littlehampton mayor, Cllr Joyce Bowyer, said: “WSCC has already made this decision without consulting residents or the town council, but the definition of the town centre is still up for discussion, so the town council is giving people the opportunity to express their views”.

The town council is now asking people to spare a couple of minutes to answer some questions online or by completing a form at the town council offices at Manor House, in Church Street.
