Little Common Library Open Day

LITTLE Common library, at Little Common Community Centre, held an open day to celebrate, and commemorate, its seventh anniversary.

The library, which, up until seven years ago, was owned by East Sussex County Council was saved from closure when the team of volunteers raised the necessary funds to prevent its demise.

Since then it has continued to serve local people, opening twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Secretary of the library, Yvonne Pearson said that the majority of the books in the library are donated, and often they receive duplicates of the same book, but the spares don't go to waste as they are sold at the annual open day.

She said: "We don't need two copies of the same book in the library so any spares, that we accumulate, we save and then once a year we hold an open day and sell the excess stock."

The money raised from the sale of the books, the raffle, and the bric a brac stall at the open day, goes towards paying the rent for the library.

Attending the open day was Bexhill Town Mayoress Maureen Douart who drew the tickets for the raffle, and praised the work of the thirty volunteers, whose dedication ensures this important service is kept available for local residents.

She said: "I think the library is brilliant and the thirty volunteers, who work so hard, are wonderful."
