The organisers are looking for a carnival queen and two princesses between the ages of 14 and 17, a junior queen between 11 and 13 and two flower girls, aged seven to ten.

Winning girls will get a cash prize, a designer ball gown, plus day wear, and the senior queen also receives the Cuff Miller award for a year.

However, those who enter and win will be expected to take part in carnival duties for the full year, which includes appearing at various events.

Freda Hughes, president of the Littlehampton Carnival Association, said this year the event would be looking to recruit former carnival royalty to help celebrate the 40th anniversary.

She has already found a number of former queens and princesses to take part but would like to hear from more people who have been involved with the carnival in the past.

Freda said: “We are aiming in the procession to get 10 bands.

“We have already got four bigger bands and are looking to get more.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

Freda has also been told by other members of the Littlehampton Carnival Association that she may also be involved in the procession, though she does not yet know in what capacity.

The deadline to enter is Wednesday, February 19.
