Littlehampton lifeguard's Ironman bid

The 21-year-old has set his sights on the tough triathlon, which is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26-mile marathon, and takes place on the island in May.

Mark said: "One of the reasons I chose Lanzarote is because it is considered to be one of the hardest in the world and I thought if I was going to do it, I may as well choose the hardest one to do.

"I think, for most triathletes, the Ironman is the ultimate goal."

But before he even gets to the games, he must face another big challenge '“ trying to secure sponsorship to fund the quest and raise thousands of pounds for Chestnut Tree House children's hospice in Angmering.

"Because of the recession, companies are not agreeing to give any money at the moment. And it is a rather expensive sport," he pointed out.

Mark, who lives in Ferring, started taking part in triathlons after coming back from an overseas placement year in America, where he was introduced to the sport by friends.

One of the reasons he was drawn to the sport was the swimming element '“ something he is very good at, having been a lifeguard at Littlehampton beach for the past three years.

"Swimming is definitely my strong point. I was injured this year and all I could do was swim," he said.
