The 13 children from year-6 were presented with the Best Presented Team award at the Greenpower Gathering of Goblins.

Their smart blue racing suits, supplied by Chandlers BMW and Mini, impressed judges at the event, which brought together 67 schools to race battery-powered cars they had designed and built.

And as well as enjoying success in the fashion stakes, the River Beach team finished a creditable 13th overall after the day’s three challenges – a slalom, drag race and sprint.

They had spent many hours since October, in an after-school club, building and developing this year’s Goblin cars for the event, overcoming a number of technical issues along the day.

Teacher Ben Case said: “They enjoyed a great day at Goodwood. The cars were designed so that they included the class picture for each of the classes in the school, from nursery to year-6.

“The children have enjoyed the experience very much.”

More than 400 schools across the UK, from primary to sixth-form, are involved in the highly successful Greenpower challenge to design, build, and race a single-seat electric car, providing young people with a unique hands-on opportunity to engage in engineering.
