Littlehampton raises the flag to salute Paralympics

THE iconic symbol of this year’s Paralympic Games is now proudly flying aloft in Littlehampton.

The Paralympic flag was raised outside the Arun Civic Centre, in Maltravers Road, earlier this month, by some of the area’s chosen few who will be helping to mark the sporting event.

Torchbearer Carrie Reynolds and games maker Margaret Murphy helped raised the symbol of sporting unity above the council offices, alongside Arun District Council’s chief executive Nigel Lynn.

The flag, which has a white background, with the Paralympic symbol in the centre, was first featured during the closing ceremony of the Athens Paralympic Games, in 2004.

Flag-raiser Margaret Murphy is one of the countless volunteers who will be helping to make this summer’s games tick along smoothly.

She said: “It is wonderful to see the Paralympic flag flying in the town, highlighting the importance of these games and paying tribute to the inspiring athletes and coaches, as well as the spirit of the games.”

Nigel said he took great pride in helping to support, not only the Paralympic Games, but the Olympics, too. He added that it was important that communities played their part in supporting the worldwide event.

He said: “The games are an inspiration and we are proud of our athletes, trainers and the thousands of volunteers who have made it all possible.”
