THE Man of Steel may well be faster than a speeding bullet but this cape-wearing accountant from Rustington is hoping his superpowers will not fail him during his gruelling, month-long charity challenge.

‘Superman’ Simon Allchin has set himself the tricky task of completing a ten-mile run every day throughout May.

Simon, who works at the Body Shop Foundation’s UK HQ, in Watersmead Park, Littlehampton, is tackling the run to support the retailer’s Build India campaign, which aims to create new health facilities for disabled children.

Throughout his challenge, the 44-year-old, of Hyde Gardens, will be wearing his home-made superhero costume.

Simon kicked off his 31-day epic at his ten-year-old daughter Ella’s school on Friday, joining in with their fun day (see pages 12 and 13).

Speaking of his fundraiser, he said: “I’m confident I will be able to do it. I’m quite stubborn, really.

“But I have been in denial about it all – I keep trying to ignore just what it is I will be doing. Just leaving the house today I was wracked with nerves.

“I kind of wish I had called it the 10k in May instead!”

Simon’s regular route will see him running from the Body Shop, to Littlehampton, Rustington, East Preston and Angmering before finishing again at his office.

Thankfully, friend Zoe Row-landson is offering him top nutrition tips to fuel his quest.

He needs to raise about £3,000 to fund his trip to India

During it, he will be part of a team of 30 people helping to build a new rehabilitation centre for disabled children.

Once completed, it is hoped the facility will provide health care and support to up to 100 youngsters.

“Some of the children out there are desperately poor and desperately marginalised,” he added. “This just seems the right thing to do.”
