Their passion will speak volumes as they make pledges in the town’s library, which is more used to people seeking great love titles such as Jane Eyre and Gone With the Wind.

There is nothing misty-eyed about the move of the register office to a corner of the library off Boltro Road about a hundred yards from its old base at the Oaklands council complex.

West Sussex County Council has taken the hard-headed decision that is is cheaper to run the office from the library from Monday morning.

Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member, who oversees both the Library and Registration services, said: “It makes financial sense to get the best use out of our own buildings, and we are taking the opportunity to make better use of space in the library.”

“It means there will be more services under one roof, which will benefit residents.”

The current register office will be close on Thursday and not re-open until Monday at the library.

The re-sited Register Office will open and close half an hour later, to match library hours and offer customers the option of later appointments. It will operate between 9.30am and 5.30pm
