SOUTH MALLING SCHOOL: Head Teacher, Mrs Jo O'Donoghue, says: It has been great to welcome new children into our Nursery this term and they are settling in very well. The Nursery is in a purpose-built building which is very fortunate to have a patio garden with sand and mud pits, a climbing frame and willow dome area, as well as the school field. Places are filling up fast and we are now taking bookings for September 2017. If your child will be 3 years old in September and you would like a place in the school nursery, please contact the office as soon as possible. Next week parents and carers are invited to come into school and watch their child as they learn maths. This is an exciting opportunity to discover more about how the school currently teaches maths and what resources they use. The school looks forward to welcoming parents/ carers to their classrooms.

SOUTH MALLING CHURCH: (One of the Trinity churches), begin their service of Morning Praise with a breakfast this coming Sunday, beginning at 9am. This makes it possible for those attending the service to socialise a little and get to know new people, with at least a warm drink and croissants etc., to eat. The service itself begins at 9.30am after a rapid clearing away of breakfast things. It will be led by the Associate Vicar, with the music group and singers supporting - and is open to all, whether or not they come for breakfast. This week an RSPB Birdwatch will follow at about 11am for those interested, an hour of identifying and marking down the wide range of birds who use the beautiful churchyard. All are welcome to any or all parts of Sunday’s events.

RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION: Malling Residents Association met last night to discuss issues that impinge on the well-being of Malling people. Polite Community Notices are now available from the association. They have been designed to apply to cars parked inconsiderately in Malling. It is a reminder to those that park badly that residents face daily issues with poor parking. If you would like some of these leaflets then please apply to [email protected], who will make arrangements for delivery. There was discussion of the proposed plan to ban parking on through roads in new Malling, with a bit of a worry about whether this would lead to heavier parking in cul de sacs and a hope that it might make the hill from the estate down to Church Lane a little safer. Residents were told of a plan to provide safe play areas for children, beginning probably in Queen’s Road and Fitzgerald Road, safe roads where there is no through traffic. It is proposed to start modestly with three hours of play on one day a month, beginning in April. The organisers are considering how to gain support for the idea from local people.

FOOD BANK: Malling Food Bank hosted a very successful Christmas Day Party, with over 40 guests. The manager, Matt Moulding, thanked the Store Manager of Tesco, Lewes, which had been very generous with support for the party and continues to support the Food Bank from week to week. Customers have settled down quickly in their new accommodation at the Phoenix Centre. Referrers are sending increasing numbers of people for help to the Foodbank, which is working hard to meet their needs, funded from donations, gifts and a small payment from Foodbank customers. The Phoenix Centre has allowed them to use a second room without cost. Unfortunately the rise in its use is also an indicator of the increasing number of people who, from time to time and more frequently now, cannot quite make ends meet.
