Man escapes bungalow blaze

AN elderly man escaped when his bungalow caught fire today (Tuesday).

The blaze began in a ground floor airing cupboard, near the living area of the detached home in Old Drive, Polegate.

Firefighters received a call at 10.30am and a crew from Hailsham raced to the scene.

They found the occupant in the street and the bungalow roof in flames.

Two more teams of firefighters from Eastbourne and Lewes arrived to help.

A thermal image camera, two hose reels with water and six breathing apparatus were used.

The fire was under control by 11.08am.

Later firefighters set up a ventilation fan to clear the smoke.

No one was hurt in the blaze but there was extensive damage to the building.
