Man fined for illegally dumping rubbish in Peacehaven

Jamie Tanner, of Eastbourne, pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a total of £962.48 including a victim surcharge of £60. He was also sentenced to a Community Order of 80 hours unpaid work.

Councillor Paul Franklin, Lead Member at Lewes District Council, said: “Fly-tipping is illegal and the council will always consider prosecuting in order to protect the environment and save council tax payers money from the costs of clearing up.

“Fly-tipping is one of the most anti-social crimes being committed against the environment as it causes pollution, may be harmful, is an eyesore and can in some cases cause disruption to wildlife.

“I urge anyone who witnesses fly-tipping to report it to the council.”

The investigation carried out by Lewes District Council identified that although the household waste had been dumped at Hoyle Road industrial estate in Peacehaven, it had originated from an address in the district.

The person who had been paid to dispose of it on behalf of the agent of the property had just dumped it.

The council welcomes the help of residents to assist with prevention and enforcement by reporting incidents of fly-tipping.

Where possible, residents are urged to take note of the following, but do not approach offenders and do not touch or move fly-tipped materials:

· The date and time the fly-tipping occurred.

· The model, make, registration number and colour of vehicle used.

· A description of the offender.

· A description of fly-tipped materials and their quantity.
