Magistrates heard how Lovis, 35, pushed his girlfriend to the floor and sprayed her with blue dye.

Prosecuting, Richard Stevenson told the court that Lovis had said he could recall having an argument with Ms Betts but added that he could not remember what it was about.

Mr Stevenson said Lovis remembered 'losing it' and flying into a rage. He said that Lovis pushed Ms Betts on to the bathroom floor, where she banged her head on a wooden bath panel. He then threw the cabinet at her, which hit her on the hand, before spraying her with the blue dye.

Mr Stevenson said that Lovis could not remember spraying his girlfriend with the dye but added that it 'must have happened' because he woke up with dye on him.

He said that a mixture of drink and stress had caused him to lose his temper but added that there were 'no excuses' for his actions. 'He is very ashamed,' said Mr Stevenson.

The court heard how Ms Betts suffered bruising to her right wrist and swelling to the bridge of the nose. She also received abrasions to both knees while her arm was later put into a sling.

Defending, Paula Bristow said that the couple had since been reconciled and Ms Betts did not want to see Lovis go to prison. Ms Bristow said that the couple now had a stable relationship and added that Lovis had 'various things going on in his life'.

Lovis pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The case was adjourned until Wednesday September 11 for pre-sentence reports. Lovis was granted unconditional bail.
