Marathon knitter goes for World Record hat-trick

DETERMINED fundraiser Susie Hewer, from Ewhurst Green, will complete her 31st marathon to boost funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK at the 2013 Virgin London Marathon on April 21.

Pounding the capital’s streets with knitting needles in hand, Susie, known as the ‘Extreme Knitting Redhead’, aims to beat her own Guinness World Record for knitting the longest scarf while running a marathon.

With the Brighton Marathon as a warm-up the week prior, on 14 April, the London Marathon heralds the start of a 111 day running challenge for Susie.

The 55-year-old will run a minimum of 5.5 miles each day for 55 days, until her birthday in June. When she turns 56, she will increase the daily distance to a minimum of 5.6 miles for a further 56 days.

Susie ran her first marathon for Alzheimer’s Research UK two weeks after her mum Peggy died with vascular dementia in 2005.

Since then she has continued running to raise much needed money for research to find new treatments for dementia.

During that time she has gained two Guinness World Records at the London Marathon – in 2008 she knitted the longest scarf while running a marathon and in 2010 gained the World Record for stitching the longest crochet chain.
