Maths challenge adds up to success for college

The challenge requires a good mathematical toolbox, excellent problem solving 
skills and an ability to use 
logic and ingenuity under pressure.

The challengers met only once for a pre-challenge briefing and were issued with a past paper to get a feel for the questions.

The entrants gathered in the main hall, the clock was started, and for an hour there was silence punctuated only by quizzical stares into the middle distance and much scratching of heads.

After an impatient wait for the answers to be posted out, the brainy bunch helped Robertsbridge Community College to its best ever set of results.

John Crouch, operations and communications manager at the school, said: “Most pupils scored very well and several were honoured with special certificates.

“Amy Brightwell, Marie-Claire Pennington, Alfie Corroll, Sam Alff and Ben Jackson were given Bronze Awards.

“Chris Hetherington and Katherine Fry went one better with Silver Awards, and Brandon Bourner reached the Gold standard – rare achievements!

“The outstanding performance of the day was without doubt given by Robert Watts, who achieved the best score in the school (despite only being in Year 9), a Gold Award and an invitation to take part in the next round of the Maths Olympiad.

“Huge congratulations to all who took part and we wish Robert good luck in the next stage of his journey to become a national winner!”
