Matrimonyput in focus

A story of a woman who became a midwife the day she married is among those included in a Middleton exhibition.

The tale behind Lucille Webster's eventful day in June 1965 puts the human element into the Week of Marriage display. It is being staged at St Nicholas Church between 9am and 4pm from next Wednesdayto February 4 to mark the Mothers' Union's celebration of matrimony.

Also on show will be wedding photographs, orders of service, telegrams and some fine wedding dresses covering the past century.

Sue Fitzgerald, the secretary of the St Nicholas' branch of the MU, said: 'We appealed for material a few weeks ago and have been amazed and amused by the wealth of items offered by members of our congregation.

'It will make a fascinating show with over 100 photographs and six bride's and bridesmaid's dresses displayed.

'We wanted to demonstrate how important the marriage ceremony has been to so many of us in peace and war down the years and what happy occasions they are '“ or should be.'

The enlarged St Nicholas Church provides a splendid venue for exhibitions since building work ended last year.
