The couple emerged and stood on the steps of the house for photographs.

They crossed the road and issued a brief statement before making their way down School Hill.

Shortly after they drove off.

John Farrant, emerged at 1.15pm, and said to the waiting journalists: 'Thank you for your patience. At least it is a nice sunny day and it makes a change for you to be further down the hill than outside the law courts.'

His wife Patricia said: 'We are delighted with the pregnancy. We just wanted to let you know we take our responsibilities very seriously and regard the best interests of the child as paramount.

'What we would wish now is the right to pursue our family life in private.'

The couple made no further comment.
