Mid-summer fair raises funds for Ugandan charity

A CHARITY mid-summer fair was held at St Barnabas Church on 26th June.

The fair, in aid of the Good Samaritan (Uganda) Trust, attracted a good crowd as the sun shone down on what was one of the best days of summer to date.

There was plenty to keep the crowds entertained with a raffle and tombola, stalls sold books, bric a brac, greetings cards and home-made cakes.

Refreshments, including a ploughman's lunch, kept the hunger pangs at bay and an organ recital was performed by Dr Steve Martin.

Dr Martin, who is the warden and musical director of St Barnabas, played a selection of classical and popular pieces, which included music by his favourite composer J.S Bach along with Edward Elgar's 'Nimrod', and Verdi's 'Grand March'.

Dr Martin and his wife Liz have been staunch supporters of the Good Samaritan (Uganda) Trust for a number of years.

The charity cares for children who are abandoned or orphaned by parents who have AIDS.

The fair raised approximately 500 for the Trust which Liz will personally take to Uganda in October when she visits and stays at the orphanage.

Steve said: "Liz will help buy items for the children, including clothes, shoes and other necessitates."

He added: "We had a very good turnout at the fair and it was a great atmosphere."
