Midhurst store site set to go back on the market in the next six weeks

IT IS likely to be another six weeks before the supermarket site at Midhurst is back on the market.

A spokesman for Chichester District Council which owns the site next to the Grange Community and Leisure Centre told the Observer officers were currently working on the project ‘and hope to market the site in late February or early March’.

Fears have already been expressed that Midhurst may not now get a prime supermarket after the break down of talks with Waitrose.

And with each month that passes without action the site value is dropping along with any price supermarket developers would be prepared to stump up for the site.

A Midhurst planning consultant who voiced concerns before Christmas said this week: “This latest delay is unfortunate as the value of the site is falling all the time and unless Chichester District Council lowers its sights considerably this piece of land is likely to remain undeveloped for years to come.”

Last year Waitrose announced it had been forced to rethink its original plans because the supermarket sector was facing ‘changes in trading conditions’.

It seems their new offer to CDC fell on stony ground.
