Mini-bike menace

West Sussex has been hit by the mini-morotbike menace that has swept the country. Residents in growing numbers of areas have protested about the illegal use of the vehicles on housing estates and are urging police to take action.

New figures show there has been a twenty-fold increase in the number of mini-motorbikes since 2001, with 144,00 now in circulation throughout the country.

Although it is generally illegal to ride the bikes on public land, the law is being increasingly flouted in West Sussex, with the problem intensifying during the Easter holidays.

Riders using them on the road, even on housing estates, must wear a helmet, have tax and insurance and hold a valid driving licence. Young people under the age of 16 can only ride them on private land and not on public roads.
