Mini motorbike seized as boys ride in traffic

Two Eastern European boys had a mini motorbike seized by police in Bognor Regis town centre.

The officers took the vehicle away from the rider, aged 15, who had a pillion passenger. The rider has also been reported for traffic offences.

Inspector John Merrick, of Bognor police station, warned anyone who used a mini motorbike outside the law faced the same action from his officers.

"These are not toys and are deemed mechanically propelled vehicles so must be used in accordance with the law," he stated.

"This is the message that people should heed as any offences will be dealt with and vehicles seized if necessary and appropriate.

"I have issued warnings previously about the use of mini motorbikes and the fact they could be seized, not only if uninsured, but also if used in an anti-social manner whereby section 59 of the Police Reform Act applies."

The incident with the mini motorbike occurred at about 12.30pm on Friday, May 31.

It took place in Linden Road. A resident, Sheila Gibbons, said the mini-motorbike '“ with the rider allegedly lacking a crash helmet, road tax and insurance '“ was being ridden close to the car in front.

Its driver braked to cause the mini-motorbike to suddenly come to a halt along with the car behind.

The driver from the front vehicle got out and started talking to the youngsters.

"He told the rider he shouldn't be on the road," said Mrs Gibbons. "But the rider was telling him he didn't need anything."

As the rider went to get away, the driver made a citizen's arrest to prevent an escape before the two police officers arrived. Mrs Gibbons said: "These mini motorbikes should not be allowed on the roads. They are lethal. Anyone who rides them is endangering themselves and the public."
