BIG SCREEN SOCIAL NIGHT: The next Big Screen Social Night will include the Mountfield Premiere of the new feature film 'Dad's Army' on Friday 22nd July. Only released in the UK in February this year, Dad's Army stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Toby Jones, Bill Nighy (Sgt. Wilson), Michael Gambon, Annette 'One Foot in the Grave' Crosbie, Tom Courtenay and, eerily, Ian Lavender who was Private Pike in the original TV series but has now made it to a very silver-haired Brigadier! Doors open 7.30 pm and the Club will be open to members and their guests for pre- and post-film drinks.

VILLAGE HALL REFURBISHMENT: There will not be Big Screen Social Nights in August and September because the hall will be closed for floor refurbishment from August 13th to September 1st. Instead of the social evenings, there will be a daytime Autumn Gathering on Sunday 25th September along the lines of the very successful and much enjoyed Christmas Gathering last December. More details of that event in Village Voice nearer the time but make sure it’s in your diaries now.

ROAD CLOSURES: Solomon’s Lane is now closed apart from access and most details seemed to have been ironed out.The school bus is still an issue and needs a better solution though it’s hard to say quite what. We just need to get through a few more days till the end of term. And the garden waste collection was still being sorted out the last we heard. Chatting to people, it seems that the good folk of Solomon’s Lane are rather enjoying not being on a rat run for three months and having seen traffic sweeping round the Old Bakery first thing in the morning, we are not surprised. Southern Water have a permit for the closure of Solomon’s Lane until 23rd September. A reminder of the other scheduled road closures: New Cut from Sept 12th to 30th, Church Road from Oct 3rd to 28th, Hoath Hill from October 24th to November 18th, and Eatenden Lane from November 14th to March 10th. Wherever possible, the contractors will work to maintain access for local people, deliveries, suppliers, etc. We will repeat this listing from time to time and will keep you posted with all the news of the works in this Village Voice.
