Mountfield

BILL HUMPHREYS: Wendy and Michael have asked us to pass on their gratitude and thanks 'to everyone for their kindness and support following Dad's death, it has been quite overwhelming and a great comfort to us all to know how so many people in the village have been so thoughtful and caring'. We hope to have a longer piece about Bill soon, following his funeral last week.

THROUGH TREES & TIME: Peter writes: The four walks that I’m leading under this name for the last time this year have now completely sold out. In fact, all four have a few over the normal maximum of a dozen per walk but it’s all in good causes: Mountfield Church, local conservation funds and better understanding of this special part of the High Weald AONB. If there is continued demand, I am prepared to look at the idea of a fifth date but I need to know very soon. Full details of the walks are on the parish website (mountfield.org). Other walks are in preparation for the future.

TICS: We have mentioned these the last couple of years and must give a warning about this year. Not only do conditions seem to have been particularly good for the little blighters this year, we also have the threat of a range of nasty European ticks coming over here. Just by way of context, at the time of filing this column, we have taken over 40 ticks off our dogs. On the same date in the last four years, we’d recorded 16, 4, 36 and 14 so it looks to be a bad year. Our record year was 2012 when we took 504 off two dogs in under twelve months. Be careful out there.

Should you wish to receive the local club Newsletter or want to make any suggestions, please email Club Secretary [email protected] or phone or text.

FINALLY: We will have a report next week on the Parish Assembly but it has been a fairly quiet year compared with some. This was brought home to us when we met Michael Ashton at Bill’s funeral. Michael was chairman of Mountfield Parish Council for many years. It is extraordinary that one small parish should have had to contend with so many major threats: the proposed expansion of the tip up at the mine on Michael’s watch, the proposed expansion of the reservoir on Fred’s watch, the proposed incinerator on Colin’s watch, plus a several other lesser threats which would signify as major anywhere else. The only major battle Mountfield didn’t win was the loss of the school. It was interesting too to meet Michael’s wife Ingrid, another Mountfieldian who was born and grew up at Birchford Cottages up behind Baldwins Farm. Those cottages ar now little more than a few bumps in the grass and a couple of garden trees but Ingrid has promised to look out some of the old photographs of Birchford for the village archive.

CONTACT: As ever, if you have anything for the Village Voice, we can be contacted on 880614 or via [email protected]. We always welcome contributions and feedback.
