BILL HUMPHRIES: We must start this week with the sad News that Bill left us in the early hours of last Saturday (March 19th) after many months of illness. We will have more details next week but, for now, Bill's funeral will in All Saints, Mountfield on Thursday 7th at 11.00. Everyone's thoughts are with his wife Marilin and Wendy and her brothers.

RIVERHALL CROSSING: We touched last week on the fact that this had been a matter for continued concern and we can now report that the Network Rail has responded by agreeing to meet with residents and representatives of the Parish Council some time after Easter. We’ll keep you posted.

MOUNTFIELD WALKS: Peter writes: I announced in last week’s Village Voice that I shall be repeating the walk I have led for the last two years for one final year. Bookings are already beginning to come in an have there fore already added an extra date on May 8th. I also hope to announce some guests experts on some of the dates. Each walk will look at medieval earthworks from the 13th century, industrial remains like mine pits and quarries from later centuries, evidence of historic woodland crafts like coppicing and charcoal burning, the old roads of the parish, the plants of the Ancient Woodlands including one rare population and an even rarer tree, plus foraging (with recipes) and a serious emphasis on fun. The walk is easy (though mud and brambles), two miles in length and three hours in duration. The dates now are Sunday April 24th, May 1st and May 8th with all proceeds going to Mountfield Church. THE MESSENGER: We have mentioned that Robert Chambers is finally retiring from his triple roles on The Messenger of treasurer, distributor-in-chief and senior advertising executive. (Also junior advertising executive, middle advertising executive… etc.) Slowly but surely, the new team is beginning to come together to support Yve in her work as editor — and we’ll announce the new line up soon — but… We still need a treasurer. This isn’t a particularly demanding role. It involves receiving monies in cash and cheques from advertisers, subscriptions from the deliverers as they collect them (for two or three months of the year apart from new arrivals in the villages), banking in Battle when you’re next going in, and paying the printers for each month’s issue. The Messenger is an important part of the local grapevine and we really need someone to step forward and join the team of editor, ad person, central distributor, village distributors, local deliverers, and contributors.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: The Club held it’s annual tournament night last Saturday (19th) with the Hardy family doing very well. Luke Hardy won the Fred Stace Darts Cup for the second year running, beating Kevin Gray 3-0 in the final. Luke, also for the second year running, won the darts pairs with Ian Hardy who beat Steve Smith and Ryan Burgess in a close final 2-0. Finally, Wayne Hardy won the shove tournament beating Kevin Gray in the final. The organiser, Steve Smith, would like to thank all those who attended. To cap it all, Luke Hardy also won the darts league Captains Cup for Mountfield.

Another family quiz night is being arranged for Saturday April 16th with all money raised going to local good causes and charity. There will be a £2.50 entry fee with teams of no more than 6 please. Please book your place by phoning or texting Steve Smith on 07720 298971.
