PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The full draft minutes of the last parish council meeting are now on both the Parish Council notice board (by the phone box on New Cut) and on the parish website (mountfield.org.uk). These have a lot more details about Southern Water’s plans and schedules for the construction of the sewerage system and the treatment plant than we gave last week. For example, the works are now not likely to start until spring next year. In addition to ensuring access for all residents throughout the works in general and the road closures in particular, they will also arrange for the transportation of wheelie bins and recycling boxes to the collection points. There was also confirmation that Southern Water are planning to hold further information sessions for residents nearer the time.

MOUNTFIELD RIDE AND WALK: Despite the rash of competing events — and there do seem to be more each year, this was a great success. All the riders and walkers enjoyed the course, particularly the new bits round Castle Wood and the Marlings and on Banks Farm land. The weather — which can really cut back the number of entrants — was kind this year, ranging from pleasant to downright hot. There was only one faller who had to be carted off for a scan but, happily, was declared to be fine. Fred Stace and daughter Sue did a brisk trade on the BBQ. Above all, the whole event raised nearly £900 for church funds which is a terrific result. Congratulations to all concerned in making the day such a success.

DACS AGM: The Darwell Area Conservation Society held its first AGM on Sunday. Victoria Fraser’s chairman’s report was able to reflect a very successful year, building on all the previous campaigning against unwelcome and illegal developments, networking with key people such as planning officers, and holding a number of events to celebrate this special part of the AONB. There are already several future events planned, include two particularly special ones for next year. Watch this space.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: The Club’s snooker team got the season off to a fine start with a 3-2 away win at Battle. The first frame went the way of the home team but Kevin Gray pulled things back to 1-1with the help of a 17 break. When Mountfield’s Andy Saunders lost the third frame on the black the hosts looked in control at 2-1 but captain Steve Smith had other ideas and won the next frame for Mountfield and pulled the scores back to 2-2. Pete Last won the final frame on the black to give us a winning 3-2 start to the season.

The Club has arranged a Quiz Night on Thursday October 2nd starting at approximately 8.00 pm with a £2.00 entry fee for each player. All non-members are welcome. The darts season also gets under way soon and should any one want to play for the darts or shove team please call Steve Sutton on 07746 640555. And remember, the Club isn’t all about snooker and darts; it’s also a good place for a quiet drink and a natter with neighbours. Dates for other future events will be announced in the near future.

SNAKE IN THE GRASS: We had an interesting email this week from Bernie up at John’s Cross: “I just thought I’d throw this in your direction. Earlier this week I saw a snake. It was about 9” (23cm) long, very thin, (about the size of a fat worm), appeared to have black or dark markings on the side of it’s head and was gold in colour in the afternoon sunshine. Although I had never seen anything like this before, I now know what it was but do you or any of your readership? Bernie and the two greyhounds (Betty and Prince).”

Funnily enough, we too think we know as we also saw one for the first time a couple of weeks ago and were flummoxed for a while. Any responses that can confirm identification are welcome. Correct answer next week — unless of course we end up with several correct answers!

FINALLY: We thought we should share the following with you. We took delivery of a car harness for a young dog this week and were concerned to read: “It is now part of the Highway Code that all dogs must be strapped in while driving”. Funny, we’d always rather assumed that the Highway Code would have said that dogs shouldn’t drive at all — but what do we know?
