MOUNTFIELD PARISH COUNCIL: Last Tuesday’s meeting (September 9th) was attended by Peter Simmons and Steve Jones from Southern Water as there were a few questions and problems to resolve, principally regarding the road closures. They were able to give assurances that all residents of Solomon’s Lane will have access to their properties at all times, though they may have to go the long way round the block depending on where SW’s hole in the road is at any given time. They have taken up the question of access for the school bus as it won’t be able to use its normal route and there is no question of a double decker negotiating the level crossing and Riverhall Bridge. Southern Water are in discussion with both Robertsbridge Community College and the bus company and will keep MPC posted. Your Village Voices will pass it on. The question of the rat run traffic up and down Eatenden Lane is more difficult. The general estimate is that well over half the traffic on the lane is rat run rather serving the village or local employers. The danger, obviously, is that while Eatenden Lane is closed, all that traffic will charge up the Mine Road — which is not what that junction needs, and while Solomon’s Lane is closed, it will tear along Hoath Hill. They will explore the idea of signage up at Netherfield Church but warned that commuter traffic quickly gets wise to these things. Finally, Trina Seal had raised the nature of the fencing either side of the plant entrance. Her fear was industrial style, galvanised railings, complete with large in-yer-face signage. The plans are apparently for spiles and stock fencing with renewed hedging. Her suggestion of post and rail with hedging has been added to the design mix for discussion.

DATES AND REMINDERS: First, a reminder about tomorrow (Saturday, September 20th) which is the Mountfield Ride and Walk which starts and finishes opposite the church. Ample parking for cars and boxes, refreshments and hot dogs, set off anytime from 9.30 to 12.30. The full course is approximately 10 miles but there are opportunities to tailor the distance according to fitness of mounts or walkers. There are rosettes for all who complete the whole course — but then no-one will know if you cut a corner and the marshals won’t tell. Anyone who has driven round the roundabout at John’s Cross will know that there is a lot of local competition but, as we’ve said before, this Ride and Walk reaches parts of the local countryside no other can. So let’s hope for a good turnout as all proceeds are in aid of All Saints Church, Mountfield. Secondly, a reminder about the DACS annual party and AGM the following day (Sunday 21st, 4.00 pm). Please note the change of venue. It will take place at Banks Farm, not Brightling Village Hall. MOUNTFIELD CLUB: The new snooker season started this week and the Club team had an impressive 5-1 home win over Burwash last week in their final pre-season friendly. Dennis Smith on his debut won his frame; there were also wins for Kevin Gray, Steve Smith, Sean Spillett and Andy Saunders. The league starts this week with an away trip to Battle. The new darts season is starting soon and more information will follow soon. Finally, Steve Smith will be hosting another quiz night at the club on Thursday October 4 with all welcome.
