Move to build statue to honour of Bognor's founder

A statue of the founder of modern Bognor Regis is being planned by councillors.

The members of the town council want the first public artwork of Sir Richard Hotham to recognise his role in creating the town.

It is intended that the statue should be placed in Hotham Park, which is the remaining open space from his private estate.

Cllr Paul Wells said: "This is an exciting project and one of which we can be proud.

"We should take control of this project because it's our idea."

No cost or design for the statue has yet been determined. It could be in bronze or stone, depending on how much money is available.

Cllr Wells called on the town council to work with Arun District Council, which runs the park, to find a suitable location within the revamped area for the statue.

Park manager Michael Rowland has told the town council he considered the statue to be an excellent idea. He gave the support of Arun's parks and greenspace department for the scheme.

The idea will be considered at future meetings of the park's working party. But no timescale has been set for the statue to be installed.
