MP Fights On

Bexhill MP Greg Barker has pledged to fight Post Office closures "every step of the way".

He gave his immediate reaction to the news that two local branches have been shortlisted for closure - Collington Mansions and London Road.

Mr Barker talked with Post Office representatives on Monday and said: "It was a very sombre meeting.

"I don't think they have done any real research in Bexhill at all.

"If you look at Collington Mansions, which they are proposing to close, there are 1,378 customer transactions a week. That compares to the main Post Office which does 4,452 - yet Collington Mansions is a quarter of the size of the main Post Office. I find it hard to believe there is a decent case therefore for closing that branch."

He felt older residents in the area rely on their neighbourhood branch and would find the post office in Devonshire Square too far away, with too many long queues to contend with.

The MP has been vocal in his personal opposition to closures and recently organised a public meeting and demonstration through the town centre.

He added: "I haven't given up at all. I will fight this every step of the way. It defies economic logic, and reinforces my view these cuts have been imposed centrally without regard to local conditions."
