MP praises skill of college artists

Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, has praised the artistic skill demonstrated by Sussex Downs College students after attending Assemble, an art show organised by the college at the Foundry Gallery, in Lewes.

As well as featuring large-scale freestanding cardboard figures and walk through collage installations from the Art and Design students at Sussex Downs College, visitors were also given a chance to view innovative hanging installations of patterns and fabrics by textiles students, displays by graphic design students and also a ‘projected’ graphic novel of The Odyssey created by students on the Digital Design course.

Speaking after the event, Ms Caulfield said: “I was thrilled to be invited to attend this event, which demonstrated the excellent work being carried out by Sussex Downs College, and of course its students.”

“Those currently studying, or looking to study at the college, need look no further than Lewes Train Station to see how they can progress within the industry, even before leaving further education, as was demonstrated by former Sussex Downs College student Jessica Cheung, who was recently commissioned to provide Lewes Train Station with artwork promoting the station as a Gateway to the South Downs National Park.

“With so much talent coming through our education system, as demonstrated by the fantastic pieces exhibited at the Assemble event, I think it is vital that those entering this industry are properly supported in future, and I am therefore pleased that this Government are continuing to support related bodies, such as the Arts Council.”

The artwork at Lewes Railway Station was commissioned by Sussex Community Rail Partnership and South Downs National Park through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund to mark its significance as a Gateway to the South Downs National Park.

The work, inspired by old fashioned rail posters, was produced by Jessica Cheung, a former Sussex Downs College pupil and current Bournemouth University student, who said: “I wanted to show the benefits of taking public transport, no matter your age or background.”
