MP supports Arundel traders

MP Nick Herbert gave his support to Arundel when he visited the town both as part of Small Business Saturday and to promote Arundel by Candlelight.

Small Business Saturday is a national, Government-backed initiative designed to encourage people to support smaller local businesses (turn to page 36 for a detailed report).

It was the first time the day was recognised in the UK.

Saturday was also when Arundel by Candlelight was held, which proved this year to be the biggest yet (pages 12 and 13).

Last week, businesses in Arundel spoke to the Gazette about the challenging trading climate, with one trader saying he feared Arundel could become a ghost town within years.

Promoting Arundel for its shops, and not merely its historic castle, is one way traders hope to boost their business fortunes in the town.

Nick Herbert said: “Small Business Saturday is a great initiative and I hope that it will be repeated next year and become better known.

“We want the message to go out that we have fantastic independent shops in our villages and market towns that are really worth a visit, not just on one Saturday but all year round.”
