MP visits Arundel school

CHILDREN had the chance to put their MP on the spot, when he visited their school.

Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel and South Downs, went to Arundel C of E School, in Jarvis Road, on Friday (May 8).

As well as a tour of the building and being treated to some Medieval gingerbread, he also fielded questions from year five students.

Mr Herbert said: "I had a really great time and I particularly enjoyed the question and answer session.

"The pupils were very bright and it was encouraging to see that they have such a keen interest in local and national issues."

He was quizzed on subjects including his life in politics and the work of an MP, with his views on Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, the management of Ford Prison, SATS tests in schools, the need for a new bypass on the A27 at Arundel and the proposal to build an eco-town at Ford.

Deputy head Andrew Simpson said: "We very much appreciated the visit from Nick Herbert and would welcome further visits. He has helped inspire our children to consider the local political picture."

In September, Andrew will take over from current head, Linda Davies, who after 14 years at the school and more than 40 in the profession, will leave to become teaching consultant

Mr Herbert added: "I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet Mrs Davies before she steps down as head teacher and wish her the very best of luck with her new venture. I'm sure she'll be greatly missed by everyone at the school."
