MP welcomes rail fare cap

AMBER Rudd has welcomed the Government’s decision to cap rail fares after writing to Chancellor George Osborne on behalf of Rye commuters.

In her letter she wrote: “Hastings really cannot afford these rail fare increases; it will have a detrimental effect on the whole town and I urge you to keep the fare rise down for 2013.”

Speaking after the recent announcement from the Government, Amber said: “I have lobbied the Government hard on this issue, as I know how important it is for rail commuters in my constituency.

“This announcement shows that the Government is doing everything they can to help ease the cost of living for families who work hard and use our railways; this is great news for commuters and the whole of Hastings and Rye.”

Amber was also due to meet this week with Charles Horton, Managing Director Southeastern, to discuss the rail fare increases.

Rye commuters are still campaigning for two trains an hour to run on the line and for better connections for commuters using Ashford Station.

The Rye line remains unelectrified.
