MP's bin bag emptied

PEOPLE on their way to work in Lewes High Street yesterday were able to gain an unusual insight into the work of the town's MP, Norman Baker.

Scattered along the pavement around the MPs office on School Hill was the content of a rubbish bag put out for collection by his staff the night before.

Hundreds of items of paperwork none of them confidential were scattered over a 100 yard area. They included circulars from public bodies, letters from MPs, and general House of Commons papers. The Sussex Express noted a letter from Frank Roy MP seeking support in February for a Private Members Bill on 'air rage'.

Mr Baker's office manager Jana Sparks said the paperwork was put in a black bin bag on Wednesday evening for the usual street collection by Lewes District Council staff early on Thursday morning. It was believed that pranksters emptied the bag along the street during the night. A bag put out by estate agents Cubitt and West was also emptied.

Ms Sparks collected up the scattered items when she arrived for work, and shortly afterwards Lewes District Council refuse collection men arrived to complete the task.

Ms Sparks said that it was a matter of strict office policy that any confidential paperwork, particularly items from constituents, was shredded before being disposed of.
