Swan Walk shopping centre is proposing to build a five-screen cinema, four new restaurants and a large new retail unit.

Gordon Lindsay, cabinet member for local economy at Horsham District Council, said the proposal shows that investors ‘have faith in the town’.

Earlier this week, council leader Ray Dawe stressed that the plan will be thoroughly considered by councillors when Swan Walk submits a planning application.

Mr Lindsay said: “I think it is great for Horsham. I think it adds to Horsham’s family attraction.

“It is a massive investment, and it shows that some people have faith in the town by preparing to put their money to the tune of millions of pounds into Horsham.”

He explained that the complex would help the town centre compete against online shopping.

He said: “Retailers are under a lot of pressure these days with internet shopping, and click and collect is doing very well in Horsham.

“You need more attractions in towns these days to draw people into the towns for shopping, and entertain them while they are there.

“It is going to appeal to families, and what it will mean is there will have to be more family restaurants.”

Swan Walk centre manager Gill Buchanan said she hoped the restaurants, cinema and store will open in October 2019.
