Mums' campaign helps to make popular fieldin Felpham cleaner '“ and safer

Campaigning mums have succeeded in making the entrance to a Felpham school safer and cleaner.

The group of six mothers had their request for a dogs' mess bin to be installed by Downview Primary School granted by councillors.

One of them, Sarah Smith, said: "We are really pleased we have got a positive result.

"It just shows you don't have to put up with an unsatisfactory situation. If you have a good case, you can succeed."

Their victory means the receptacle has been placed on the entrance road to Downview Primary School. This link with Wroxham Way also leads to a field, which is popular with dog walkers, behind the school grounds.

The area was regularly littered with dogs' faeces. Much of it was left on the ground.

Other piles were placed in plastic bags which were just dumped wherever anyone decided to leave them.

Mrs Smith began the campaign three months ago after her youngest child, Brooklyn (four), fell into a pile of poo after trying to dodge it on his scooter.

She joined with fellow mothers from the Downview Road area to achieve an improvement. The Observerreported their demand.

The mothers found willing allies in Felpham parish councillors who readily agreed to pay 367 for a bin to be installed and regularly emptied.

Felpham Parish Council clerk Peter Welch said: "It was obvious when I went to have a look at the site that a dogs' mess bin was needed there.

"Councillors agreed with that and were quite happy to pay for one to be installed."

Mrs Smith said everyone was grateful for the councillors' prompt action.

"The situation around the school has to be better for everyone now, including dog owners," she said.
