Mum’s thanks as son rescued in Littlehampton car horror

Charlotte Wright, of Parkside Avenue, was at work on Tuesday, June 16, when she received a phone call from a stranger who said her 14-year-old son, Brandon, had been hit by a car.

Mrs Wright said: “He was on his way home from school and walking up East Street at about 6pm when a woman was coming out from her driveway and ran him over.

“He went under the car and she stopped right on his kneecap!”

As Brandon screamed for help, several pedestrians ran over to his aid, including a nurse and a school PE teacher.

“All the men lifted the car off of him. I don’t know why the driver stopped, if she hadn’t I don’t know if he’d still be with me,” added the 36-year-old.

Sussex Police were called to the scene. A spokesman said: “A teenage boy was hit by a silver Hyundai i10 in East Street.”

An anonymous nurse from Summerlea House Nursing Home, in East Street, stayed with Brandon and called Mrs Wright from his mobile phone.

“I want to thank her because I couldn’t be there with him straight away. Knowing someone was there and looking after him was so important,” she said.

Mrs Wright was able to make it to the ambulance just in time before it left for St Richards Hospital in Chichester.

She said: “Brandon and I really must be the most lucky people in Littlehampton – I know it wouldn’t seem that way to most people – but to us it just shows that there really are some amazing people out there.”

Extending her gratitude to all those that rushed to Brandon’s rescue, Mrs Wright would like track down the unknown heroes and thank them in person.

“Also, the ambulance did a sterling job and was with Brandon within about three minutes and a special thank you to my nanny [grandmother], Christine, she is an amazing woman,” added Mrs Wright.

Brandon is still waiting on an MRI scan to find out the extent of damage to his kneecap. Until then he must keep his leg elevated.
