A Fontwell care development has reached the finals of a national award.

The Claremont site, recently opened by Royal Bay Care Homes, was selected for the last stage of the Pinders Healthcare Awards.

By being chosen by the judges, in the care village category, the company received 500 which it has donated to St Wilfrid's Hospice at Chichester.

The winner will be announced at Lord's Cricket Ground in London on April 2. Royal Bay managing director Russell Wilson described Claremont as a 'jewel in the crown' of West Sussex care provision.

He said it had been important to focus on a person-centred approach in its design to ensure its clients were able to enjoy a better quality of life.

The panel of Pinders assessors visited Claremont on Fontwell Avenue and were impressed by its unique design features and the emphasis on serving the needs of its clients.

They also liked the innovative use of 'green' measures such as solar heating, heat pumps and rainwater harvesting.
