Nautical cadets praised at awards ceremony

Prizes were presented to the winning cadets, with patron Rear Admiral R. John Lippett and all senior officers present at the ceremony.

Chairman Garry Price welcomed the senior officers and VIP guests from the Royal British Legion, Pagham Pram Race and Rose Green Junior School on behalf of the cadets’ officers and ship’s management committee.

He said: “I thanked them for their valuable financial support given in the last year, as this meant that parents were not asked to fund the full cost of any trips, etc.

“Our supporters this year provided the funds for the new uniform given to the cadets and some essential camping equipment, plus funds that help reduce the cost of key trips like camping.

“One of our key supporters, Aldwick Parish Council, sadly couldn’t be there on the evening but we, as always, thanked them for the support they showed to the cadets.”

Amy Bruce was named cadet of the year, which was presented by Royal British Legion representative Jenny Farrell.

Mr Price said: “This is our top award and is sponsored by the local branch of the Royal British Legion at Aldwick. Amy was selected for the top award as she always gave 100 per cent commitment and was always ready to help the other younger cadets.”

Amy was also named cadets cadet of the year, which was presented by Mr Lippett. All the cadets were able to vote for the person they felt was the best cadet on the ship, who always helped others and gave a good all-round performance.

James Price was presented with the award for best dress and turn out by commanding officer Paul Nicholls. James was always in the correct uniform and it was well maintained and clean.

Hollie Goodland received best new entrant, presented by chief of staff Captain Stuart Ginnaw, as she integrated well with the other cadets that were already part of the unit.

Lacey Eagan-Smith was named best overall band member, as she made the maximum effort to learn and progress with her new instrument, the trumpet. The award was presented by Commodore Andrew Strudwick.

Maja Radkowsra, who always gave everything a try with maximum effort, received the commanding officers award from Mr Nicholls.

TS Montrose NTC meets at Rose Green Junior School on Mondays, 6.30pm to 8.30pm. New recruits aged eight to 18 are welcome. The charge is £2 per week and free use of a full uniform is provided.

Mr Price said: “We have many activities planned, from camping trips, sailing, band and many others, but with an emphasis on all things nautical with a strict level of discipline.

“We allow the first three weeks as a try out at no cost and only then do people commit if they wish to do so, with which they are then provided with a uniform.

“If a cadet wants to join the band, there is no cost plus we will supply the instrument and then teach them, again at no cost.”

Adults who would like to volunteer are also welcome, no skills are required just the ability to be able to help the young people to have fun.
