Poet’s Corner: A local lad named Ben, decided to take up his pen, He wrote about things he knew, received by all with a phew! The following is one of his creations:

“There is a man in Netherfield,

He writes a paper column,

Gathering stories that others yield,

His writing’s far from solemn.

Some weeks he has a lot to say,

On others not a lot,

He writes the stories that come his way,

And publishes what he’s got.

There is not always much to write about,

So Maurice does it on the hoof,

But when there’s something to shout about,

He always tells the truth.

He’s out to recruit some friends to play,

The badminton he adores,

Promotes it in his column on Friday,

He’s good at keeping score.

So far only two new folks,

One full of pains and aches,

But runs round like a two year old,

Quite an effort that he makes.

Anyway, back to the paper,

The column needs some news,

Preferably something jolly,

To relieve any Autumn blues.

So send in all your stories,

To make the Friday paper,

Let’s hear about your glories,

Even the smallest caper.

Maurice will be happy,

As it’ll give his brain a rest,

Send them in quite snappy,

So his column stays the best.”

Mountfield Village Hall Big Screen Cinema and Social Club: The latest offering of this hugely popular Club is “Eddie the Eagle” starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman. As autumn progresses and the evenings get darker the Mountfield Village Hall Big Screen Social nights return with a heartwarming biographical comedy. Eddie the Eagle will make you laugh, cry and cheer so bring your pals to the start of the new season of pictures and popcorn. The date is Friday 25 November and doors open at 7.30 pm with a suggested donation of £5 per person towards the upkeep of the Hall.

Claverham Monday Badminton Club: The Club grows in stature every week. Absent friends have re-joined the fray, pitting their skills against old and young alike. Yes it is good fun and it does keep you fit. Come on, join in. You just turn up. First week for all newcomers is free. It starts at 20.00 (or 8.00 pm in old money) and goes on until 22.00 (or 10.00 pm). The normal cost is £5.00. That is £2.50 per hour for a good time. Reflections on a garden: That high wind we experienced in the last few days has completely removed the ash tree’s last remaining vestiges of leafy grandeur. They now cover the grass that I had trimmed diligently, about two days before this furious onslaught. Whilst raking the leaves and scarifying the grass adds muscle tone, it is something I can do without, on both counts if I am truly honest. Yes, I can hear you say, it is good for the garden, but with the wind whistling around your flower pots, who needs it?

The green bounty, that once was our spinach, kale and bean-fest, has now slowed to a slight trickle in the growing stakes. I look almost every day to see if there could be one final harvest before Winter sets in. There is still some growth, but each leaf is only the size of my fingernail. Not even a hearty breakfast for the slugs I reckon.

As I look out on the garden, memories of the colour that abounded from early April to the start of October, appear from the dark recesses of my mind. It is fantastic to think that with just a little care, the garden will repay in so many ways, even through there are dark days ahead, in out trot towards the shortest day. The brown stems become structural and indicate the position of so much vibrancy that will once again be evident next year. They also tell us where to dig in case we wish to move them during their fallow period. Oh the joys of gardening.
