Netherfield

Maria Standen, Swallow Farm

Netherfield Church - What a brilliant result our Autumn Fair in the Church was last Saturday. The sun shone after the heavy rain on Friday and the people came. Right from the start the church was full and both locals and visitors were enjoying the stalls and refreshments. Three things determine whether an event was good or not, the atmosphere, happy stallholders at the end and any profit made. Certainly the church was buzzing all morning and everyone seemed to enjoy meeting up and having a chat over their refreshments. It is always good to see families and children in the church and even better to see the children involved, especially with the games on offer. Only a few cakes were left on the produce and most stalls had done a brisk trade and, a healthy profit was made of over £400! This is a magnificent sum in only a couple of hours which will help in funding some much needed plumbing work before the winter. Our thanks to everyone who helped prepare the church, to those who gave their produce and items for sale, to those who helped run it and most importantly, to everyone who came along and supported the event.

Visitors to the church yard cannot help but notice the huge beech tree that fell in the strong winds. It does appear to have obligingly missed any headstones and not have damaged the church wall, only recently repaired following a similar event. I am hopeful the tree will have been cleared very soon but must ask that anyone visiting the church yard does not venture near it for obvious safety reasons. I also apologise if this does cause any difficulty in accessing graves but ask you are patient.
