LANDPORT BOTTOM: Following on from the report of minutes last week: Ruth O'keeffe is trying to set up a site meeting at the twitten with relevant ESCC staff. If you would like to attend this meeting (date tba) please let Ruth know. Up to four people would be ideal to represent the group. It was stressed the importance of signs going up as soon as possible, especially with the new school term starting shortly and the obvious danger of horses, buggies and small children together in a narrow twitten. There is no easy or ideal solution to this problem. A pedestrian guard rail could potentially be positioned at the top of the twitten where it meets the Motor Road but there is also the possibility of installing them at the bottom of the twitten (Highdown Road side) which would require additional works, including widening the footway which would be quite costly. The other option concerns a neighbouring property with regards to the proximity to their fence.

ST ANNE’S CHURCH: On Sunday September 18 at 3pm The Anchorite’s Tale, a life of prayer rediscovered in 1927 followed by tea at 4pm and the 12th Annual Meeting of The Friends. All welcome. Enquiries phone: 01273 474964.

CHRIST CHURCH: Worship on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Rev John Gordon and will include Holy Communion. During the service our Sunday Club for Children will be meeting. After the service we have our Congregational Meeting and church lunch. Next Friday our Tots Group starts up again after the summer break and we look forward to seeing the children and their carers back again. We have spaces for new pre-school children and their carers. If you are interested in coming along just turn up from 9.30am. The cost is £1 per family.

NEVILL RESIDENTS’: A meeting will be held on Monday September 19 in St Mary’s Church Hall, Highdown Rd at 8pm. Topics for discussion include: The proposal to build on land adjacent to Hawkenbury Way; flooding on the Green; an update on how Tesco’s grant for the Trim Trail on the Green could be spent; and the replacement of old benches on the Green. Come and contribute to the discussions about topics that affect our neighbourhood. Ron Moore, the landowner, will attend the meeting, also a representative of Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), Ian Linton Chair of Houndean Rise Residents Association now Chair of the LNP Steering Group. Also Cllr Caitlin, who sits on the Planning Committee. Matters under discussion will be Flooding on the Green, update from Sarah Neels. PCSO report, if able to attend, on local incidents. ST MARY’S GARDENING CLUB: Saturday saw another very successful Summer Show at the St Mary’s Social Centre. Some say it is the best we have had for a while. The hall was ablaze with colour from gorgeous dahlias and filled with fantastic exhibits of vegetables, flowers and fruit, delicious cookery items and gorgeous flower arrangements. The number of exhibits was up on previous years and attendance too was excellent. The atmosphere in the hall was lively as people admired the exhibits and drank tea and ate lovely homemade cake. We welcomed the Mayor, Councillor Graham Mayhew and his consort, Penny Brown who, after admiring the exhibits and partaking of refreshment very kindly gave out the trophies. Christine Gibson will have to put up more shelving in her house to accommodate her many cups: Perpetual Challenge Cup, Elphicks Cup, Ladies Cup, the Charlie Earl Cup and the Arrangement Shield. The Bird Family Trophy was won by Stephen French and his mother Mary French while the Walter Cup for cookery went to Sheila Kay. The winner of the Turf Culture Cup for her great fruit was Alison Soudain and Joy Vincent’s impressive pot plant won the French Cup. There were certificates for Best Vegetable Christopher Gibson; Best Flower Christine Gibson; Best Fruit Alison Soudain; Best Arrangement Christine Gibson; and Best Trug Christopher Gibson. The Children’s Summer Cup (8 years and over) was won by Ellie Jupp. Again this year we had a special class, The Great Potato Challenge. People are given a seed potato and a black plastic exhibitor’s bag and asked to grow the potato and bring it in on show day having cut off the leaves. The judge then weighs the potatoes in each bag and the winner is the person who has the heaviest crop of spuds. This year there were 10 entries and the winner was Christine Gibson who grew a mind¬boggling 7.066kg of amazing Picasso potatoes. Many thanks to the Mayor for handing out the cups and being our guest of honour along with his consort. Thanks also to all the people who worked very hard preparing the exhibits, helping to run the show and donating items to the various stalls. Special thanks go to Jo Langston and Anne Brown for doing the teas. It was a special day which we shall remember for a long time.

JUMBLE SALE: Nevill Juvenile Bonfire Society will be holding a Jumble Sale at the Ringmer Village Hall on Saturday September 17; doors open 2pm. We will be collecting jumble in your area during the evening of Friday September 16 from 6pm and would be grateful if you could leave any jumble by your front gate for us. This will avoid disturbing you. Unfortunately we are unable to collect any large or electrical items such as beds, fridges etc. Our next sale will be December 10, including the sale of pot grown Christmas trees.
