New Bersted football team gives players a fresh start

A high percentage of the team are said to be ‘bad boys turned good’ through their love of football.

A few local lads wanted a change in lifestyle and something which could keep them fit, so they decided to start up a football team – Bersted FC.

Chairman and founder of the new club James Britton said: “Joining the team has given them a sense of routine, camaraderie and a positive focus.

“A lot of them have young children.

“They were fed up sitting around with unhealthy habits and wanted to be an example to their kids.

“From that a six-a-side team was born.

“As word got about, more and more friends asked to join the team and started training twice a week and arranging friendlies against other teams.

“We are now a fully-fledged football club.”

Players come from both north and south Bersted.

Jason Gibbons, who has managed two girls’ teams before and won two leagues, decided to step forward as manager and coach.

Gary Young, an ex-Selsey player, joined the club as club secretary and coach.

Bersted FC train twice a week and play league matches on Sunday; they are currently in the Chichester and West Sussex Sunday League, Division Three.

Mr Young said: “The team and their families regularly meet up for events, social gatherings and now charity fundraisers, which give us all a good community vibe.

“Our upcoming events include a fancy dress fundraiser on October 7 and a charity fun run with half the sponsorship going to Macmillan.”
