New chairman at the helm for Probus Club

A well-attended meeting witnessed the end of Neil Harris's stewardship and a new beginning for the club as he handed on his collarette of office to chairman-elect Derek Barnes at the AGM of the Bognor Regis Probus Club in January.

During the handing-over period, all officers of the club reported a most successful year and looked forward to an equally successful one to come with a full programme of meetings with speakers, social occasions with ladies and guests and outings and tours arranged by the travel club.

The 2009 membership booklet with all the necessary information would be ready for issue at the February meeting.

It was agreed there would be no naming of names as the successful management of the club was built on strong team spirit.

However, retiring committee members John Dyson, Colin Hopcraft and Basil Tellwright were thanked warmly for their contribution to the wellbeing of the club.

A good omen for the year to come was the induction of one new member and the presence of three prospective new members which would take the membership into the very healthy low 80s.

With his collarette of office firmly in place, chairman Derek Barnes took the meeting forward.

As there had been no opposition from the floor to the committee's nominations, the meeting approved the officers and committee members for the year: vice-chairman Martin Judd, secretary Wilf Archer, treasurer Anthony Keywood, plus committee members Bert Cooper, Bill Davies, Neil Harris, Ray Nesbitt, Rob Sparks, Michael Tice and Brian Vaughan whose responsibilities would be agreed before the February meeting of the club.

The travel club sub-committee would be agreed at the same time.

In his inaugural address, Derek thanked all who had made the club so flourishing. He promised to uphold the constitution of the club in all its diverse ways and hand it on as a continuing vibrant success.

The Bognor Regis Probus Club meets in the Royal Norfolk Hotel every third Wednesday of the month except August.

It offers fellowship and friendship to all retired professional and businessmen, especially those recently retired who might be missing the companionship of the workplace. Following social time at the bar, there is a three-course lunch, brief business and a speaker.
