New games area officially opened

AFTER months of planning and fundraising, Battle Town Council finally opened the latest improvements at the North Trade Road recreation ground on Saturday.

During the last two years a car park and adventure play area have been provided and a new multi-use games area (MUGA) has now been added to these facilities following the adaptation of a former basketball court.

The wish for improvements at the recreation ground was one of the key findings emerging from a questionnaire circulated to all residents.

The response to the questionnaire formed the basis for the town’s Local Action Plan produced four years ago, a critical document in support of bids for grant funding. Contributions towards the cost of the MUGA were made by the Battle Partnership, Sussex Police and the Local Action Plan Steering Group, but the bulk of the funding was split equally between Battle Town Council and Rother District Council.

In inviting Lord Ampthill, the chairman of Rother District Council, to formally open the facility, town councillor Paula Fisher paid tribute to all those involved in bringing the project to fruition.

She said: “Without the initial drive and determination of the Local Action Plan Group, the subsequent advice provided by officers at the district council and the commitment of town council colleagues, this new facility would not have materialised.

“We are particularly pleased that, in addition to football and basketball, we have been able to accommodate space for mini-tennis which we hope will encourage primary aged children to help discover and develop any aptitude they have for the sport.”
