New ramp is sought by yacht club

SAILORS want to have a new launching ramp outside Bognor Regis Yacht Club.

They have applied for planning permission to construct the wooden structure over the beach in front of their clubhouse on Victoria Road South.

The ramp would be 35m long, with a flat section of 14m and a slope 21m long, and 3m wide.

Francis Elwen, of the club, said in a statement with the planning application the new ramp was needed because the existing one was becoming covered in shingle.

“The shingle at our location has increased in volume by a large amount over the last 25 years. The shingle bank is kept in place by wooden groynes which extend much further out to sea than the proposed ramp. Location of this ramp on the site of special scientific interest is unlikely to have an effect on the two major items of interest, Bognor Rocks and fossil remains, as these are a fair distance away.”

About two-thirds of the ramp’s sloping section would be covered at high tide, he stated, with little effect.
