New recycling rules set to boost Sussex

From the start of April, household pots, tubs and trays will be accepted as part of the regular recycling collections across the district.

It means residents will be able to add things like yoghurt pots, ice cream tubs, fruit and vegetable trays and ready meal trays to the bins – but they must be washed out and dried first.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “This is something we know our residents want. Why we can’t recycle items like yoghurt pots is one of the most common questions we get asked so we are confident these changes will be welcomed.”

It’s hoped the move will boost recycling levels by 4,000 tonnes per year, pushing recycling rates in the county to just over 42 per cent.

It will also drive down the cost of landfill tax payments, which is currently set at £82 per tonne of waste delivered to landfill.
