New shelter

AN innovative design for a youth shelter in Shoreham '“ the first of its kind in the country '“ could become a reality by next year.

Three Brighton University architecture students have designed the shelter for Parklands open space, near Wilmot Road, next to the new playground opened by the Southlanders' residents group and Adur District Council last month.

Mike Ailing, Philip Miller and Tom Lacey, who have been involved in designing play equipment at nearby Kingston Buci First School, were asked to come up with a design for a youth shelter which was vandal-proof, but innovative enough to keep teenagers and young people occupied.

A model of the design, shown at a consultation exercise with local residents last week, revealed around 90 per cent were in favour of the youth shelter, with about 10 per cent having concerns about it.

The design has a steel structure with seating areas, sections to play sports and even solar panels to provide under-floor lighting for the winter.

Adur Watch boss Clive Bramble said the next step was a consultation with local agencies like the police and youth services.
