New Waitrose development could be detrimental to Horsham town centre economy, says Swan Walk owners

The owners of Horsham’s Swan Walk shopping centre Aviva Investors is objecting to various aspects of the proposed new Waitrose development off Albion Way, as submitted in a planning application by the developer Westrock.

In extensive coverage in tomorrow’s County Times (Thursday November 28), concerns are raised about the connectivity of the new retail park, across Albion Way to the existing town centre - the fear being the new development could be detrimental to the town centre economy.

Meanwhile, West Sussex County Council has stated the proposed provision of car parking spaces at the development could be inadequate, with nearly 900 cars vying for just 400 spaces at peak times.

The demise of Horsham’s landmark Shelley Fountain is also forecast, as a new town square is proposed for the Bishopric / West Street junction.

The area could also be the home of a new multiplex cinema, which could pose significant ramifications for existing theatres in the town.
