NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: Thelma Nance, who was the Chairlady of Ninfield & Hooe Panel, has stepped down after many years of service. Thanks go to Thelma for her work over the years in the community and the work she did with NHW & PCSO Daryl Holter to make Ninfield and Hooe a safer place to live. She was presented with 2 bouquets from the panel which spoke volumes about how highly she was thought of locally. The new chairman of the panel is Rod Ffoulkes. At this meeting, our new PCSO, Rachael Scott was introduced, who has taken over from Daryl Holter. Also at the meeting was Ted Kemp who leads the Rother Neighbourhood Watch and who offered his assistance. Lyn Denton was happy to continue as secretary and Martin Wood volunteered to be treasurer. So the intention is that Neighbourhood Watch will continue to serve the people of Ninfield and Hooe into the future. The next meeting has been arranged for Tuesday, August 18 at 7.30 p.m., for any local residents who would like to attend. More scams are coming to light, the latest being a letter telling you that you have won a very large sum of money on a postcode lottery. To get the money all you have to do is phone the number given when you will be told to send quite a large sum to receive it. Please be aware. The rule of thumb is if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

MOBILE LIBRARY: The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library service will next be in the villages today, May 29 at Hooe, opposite Denbigh Court, 10.40 a.m. - 11.10 a.m., Ninfield, Downsview (off Church Lane), 11.20 a.m. - 11.45 p.m.

BIN COLLECTION: From June, Wealden DC will be changing the day they collect our rubbish. As of Monday, June 1, collections will take place on a MONDAY, starting with a landfill rubbish bin collection. The garden waste service is not affected. Please see your existing calendar for these collections dates.

NINFIELD FLOWER GROUP: On Monday, June 1, commencing at 7.30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall, Ninfield Flower Group welcome Sue Thompson with her demonstration entitled “A Few of my Favourite Things”. Non members are welcome at a charge of £4.00 to include refreshments. All flowers demonstrated will be raffled at the end of the evening.

NINFIELD PARISH COUNCIL: The next meeting of Ninfield Parish Council will be held on June 4, 7.15 p.m. at Ninfield Methodist Hall. All residents are welcome to attend.

BUCKET COLLECTION: A bucket collection in aid of Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice has been organised at Sainsburys, Bexhill, on June 5. Pam Doodes is looking for volunteers to assist during the day. If you feel that you could spare some time to assist, please contact Pam on 892329.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: Ninfield Methodist Church are holding a Celebration Service with Marktime Brass Band for their anniversary on June 7, 10.30 - 11.30 a.m. This will also include the Cafe style Family Church and breakfast. A warm welcome will be extended to all.

HOOE OPEN GROUP: The next meeting of Hooe Open Group will be on Friday, June 12, at 2.30 p.m., which will be a cream tea and a general knowledge quiz. For information of the club’s activities call the social organiser Edna Wallis on 01424 842591 or e-mail: [email protected].

GOLDEN CIRCLE: Then next meeting of the Golden Circle is on June 16, when Terri Sayers will be speaking on ‘Circus Life’, which sounds very interesting. The meeting, as usual, will be at 2.30 p.m. in the Methodist Hall, Ninfield. Do come along. For more information please call Jean Holmes on 212663.

CHARITY CURRY NIGHT: Lorna Tomasetti has organised a Charity Curry Night to raise finds for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, June 17, at 7.30 p.m. The event will be held at the Chilli Tree in Bexhill, with tickets costing £20 each. If you would like to support the event and enjoy an evening of curry, please contact Lorna on 07880501805/893644 to book your place. Lorna would also welcome any donations for the raffle.

NINFIELD LOCAL HISTORY GROUP: At their meeting in May they had Dr Janet Pennington talking on Witches, Warlocks and Wellington – Ritual Protection of the Home. It was a really entertaining 90 minutes, with some surprising ways that people in the past have protected their homes. One of the most common was the secreting of old shoes at access points around the home. The fire place and chimney seemed the most popular. Placing stone axe heads in the roof structure was another and, even more bizarre to people nowadays, were jars filled with nails and urine. Apparently these methods were supposed to keep evil spirits away. Dr Pennington told of other ways that have been used and the group were all fascinated with her tales. Their next meeting on June 18, 7.30 p.m. in Ninfield Methodist Church Hall, should be equally entertaining, if not more so, with Henry VIII coming in full costume to tell them of his life. He will be appearing with the assistance of Tony Harris. This talk has been experienced by some of their members who say it is not to be missed.
