A big thank you to all who helped at the 1st Ninfield Scout Group Jumble Sale last Saturday, June 29 as well as those who generously gave up their time on the Friday evening. There were a huge amount of items donated that needed sorting. The group would also like to thank everyone who came along to purchase their bargains. More than £1,000 was raised.

Ninfield Bowls Club romped to victory in their league match on June 26 against Hollington, winning 90-59. They then played St Leonards the following day, June 27, losing 56-78. On Sunday June 30, four members took part in the Fairlight Bowls Club Invitation Day. Upon their arrival, the sun was shinning however, by midday the rinks were shrouded by sea mist and a chilly wind. Bowling in the cold wind and all layered up, the members eventually lost their first match by just two points. Feeling more like winter, the weather hindered the members second match as thoughts of home were more on their minds. The club drastically lost this match. The club have played in this invitation for a few years and this was the worst weather they have experienced. Even the firehills could not be seen because of the sea mist.

Hooe History Society is next meeting on July 11, 7.30pm in Hooe Village Hall. This month the topic will be Smugglers and Smuggling. The talk has been prepared by Mavis Walledge, a well known local historian and Heather Sinden, the chairman of Hooe History. The Red Lion Hooe was known to be a special stopping off place for smugglers traveling across the marshes and Hooe had the reputation for being the centre of operations. Rumour has it that an unlucky officer of the crown met his end in the hostelry and now comes back to haunt from time to time. Does the painting of the white van on the village notice board indicate smuggling is still carried out in the sleepy village of Hooe? You are welcome to go along to the hall to hear more, and to share any information you might have. The more the merrier!
