Race Night: Thanks to everyone who supported Northiam Bonfire Society's last two fundraisers '“ we had a fantastic range of lovely crafts at the Craft Fayre, and some of us came home with some good bargains! On Saturday, the Race Night in the Rose and Crown was very well attended, although not benefitting from following on from the rugby and football as we might have suspected '“ the punters came out specially! Once again, Alice and her team were generous hosts, and it was good fun for people like me who are reluctant to gamble '“ a 50p flutter is nice and safe!

Chitiwiri: Sally and Richard are no doubt grateful to have waved off the latest consignment of donations for Chitiwiri, although I understand that their home is still not their own, as they are collecting for their annual bric-a-brac sale, which will be on June 18th. There is still plenty of time to get on with a Spring clear-out!

Jumble Sale: If you missed the date for Chitiwiri’s collection, all is not lost - Northiam Village Hall Trust are holding a Jumble Sale on 28th May, so please remember them if you have suitable items. The Trust is fundraising to repair the car park, which has suffered the ravages of the winter and will be quite a costly project.

Quiz: It’s been a month or so since our last Quiz, so I’m sure there are lots of teams ready to be tested – the Bowls Club will be holding their Quiz on Saturday 2nd April, and it costs £8.50 a head, including fish and chip supper, for tables of 8. Prior booking is essential, so please contact John Taylor – 01797 253549.

Footpath Walk: Northiam Footpath Group will be heading to Robertsbridge on Sunday for a circular walk of 5 miles. Meet in Northiam surgery car park at 12.30pm to start the walk from station road car park in Robertsbridge at 1pm.

Coffee & Chat: Two mornings to meet up for a chat this week – Coffee Stop in the Church Centre on Wednesday 10-12, and the monthly Village Hall Coffee Morning on Friday 9.30-11.30.

Spring Show: For anyone who hasn’t taken part in the Horticultural Society’s Shows, I can heartily recommend it! Far less stressful than Bake Off or the Gardening Challenge, it’s a great way to engage with a timeless village tradition, with the emphasis on enjoyment rather than competitiveness (though it’s always rather nice to win a class!). There’s something for everyone, from a single daffodil to a piece of pottery, via photographs, chutney, knitted toys and leeks. Do take a look at the schedule, available online through the village website: northiamvillage.co.uk or contact Alison Kirk – 01797 252525.

Daffodils: And on a horticultural theme, isn’t it a joy to see all the daffodils around the village which the Conservation Society and the WI planted a few years ago?
